Two FIT students had walked past 335 Eighth Avenue while it was under construction "for a very long time," they told Chelsea News. When the Lidl there finally opened, one of them picked up a loaf of bread and said, "Two dollars for a loaf of bread? This is crazy!"
That store opened on Wednesday, October 7. The same evening, farther down the avenue, a vegan cinnamon roll shop at 228 Eighth Avenue held a ribbon cutting where two kids cut the ribbon with one oversized pair of scissors. Neither opening drew the attention that went to the new spaces near West 15th Street. Between them, they mark the split in Chelsea's fall. The openings near Chelsea Market moved into famous spaces and serve big nights out. The openings on Eighth Avenue keep hours from breakfast to bedtime.
Around West 15th Street, the new tenants took over famous spaces
This fall, the blocks between Ninth and Tenth avenues filled addresses that were already well known.
STK Steakhouse opened its second New York location at 412 W. 15th Street in mid-August, Eater NY reported. It seats 200 and promises the "DJ-driven dining" that has carried its Midtown location for nearly two decades. The space used to be Salt Bae's Nusr-Et Steakhouse, which closed in 2024. One showy steakhouse closed and another moved into the same room.
Nearby, Bar CC opened Friday, September 25, at 85 10th Avenue in the former Mel's space. It's the newest project from chef Melissa Rodriguez, restaurateur Jeff Katz and Tao Group Hospitality, and it sits next door to their Crane Club. Bar CC is walk-in only. The beverage director is Harrison Ginsberg, who opened Overstory and took it to No. 17 on the World's 50 Best Bars list. Rodriguez's snack menu has six items, including a "baby" burger and "fancy" chips with Osetra caviar.
Chelsea Market, at 75 Ninth Avenue, added two food stalls with a story attached. Oishii, the strawberry brand, opened a kiosk on Thursday, August 20. Eater NY called it the brand's first standalone retail spot, and its pastries were developed with Lady M and pastry chef Yoshie Nakanishi. On Sunday, September 13, Alleva Dairy reopened inside the market, next to Fat Witch Bakery. The Italian deli was founded in Little Italy in 1892. Owner Karen King brought back the Mulberry Street recipes, including mozzarella made daily, eggplant rollatini, lasagna Bolognese and cannoli.
| Opening | Address | Opened | What came before |
|---|---|---|---|
| STK Steakhouse | 412 W. 15th St. | Mid-August | Nusr-Et Steakhouse |
| Oishii | 75 Ninth Ave., Chelsea Market | August 20 | Brand's first standalone shop |
| Alleva Dairy | 75 Ninth Ave., Chelsea Market | September 13 | Little Italy deli, founded 1892 |
| Bar CC | 85 10th Ave. | September 25 | Mel's |
All four of these places have a reputation that started somewhere else: a Midtown steakhouse, a Little Italy deli, a strawberry brand, and a team whose restaurant is next door. Each one is built for a night out or a special trip.
Eighth Avenue added places that run on a schedule
Head two avenues east and the openings look very different. Several are family- or owner-run, and all of them post their hours.
Lidl's Chelsea store is open 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, according to the company's September 23 announcement, which describes a store of more than 12,100 square feet. It's the chain's fourth Manhattan store, after Harlem in 2022 and 408 Grand Street on the Lower East Side in August 2025. The FIT students who talked to Chelsea News also found $3 tortilla chips and Chobani flip cups for under $2. The store is on the ground floor of a new building at 335 Eighth Avenue, which went up in place of an older building. Construction began in October 2023, and apartment leasing started in summer 2025.
The rest of the new places on Eighth Avenue are just as practical:
- MadDough Bagels, 261 W. 19th St., between Seventh and Eighth avenues. This family-run shop opened Saturday, September 12. Eater NY said its pizza bagels were drawing crowds and it was selling out by noon.
- Cinnaholic, 228 Eighth Ave., between West 21st and 22nd streets. This is the chain's first Chelsea location, opened over Labor Day weekend, with coffee from Coffee Project New York. It's run by a young family, owners Chance and Zoë, and Chelsea Community News lists its hours as 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and 9 a.m. to midnight Thursday through Saturday.
- Bar Lento, 158 Eighth Ave., at West 18th Street. This Italian wine bar and bistro opened Thursday, October 1, with a wine list running from Sardinia to the Veneto and a garden in back.
- Hungry Spicy, 114 Eighth Ave., near West 16th Street. It opened in July with very spicy regional Thai cooking, serving 5 to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday, Eater NY reported.
Bar Lento shows the difference between the two avenues most clearly. It sits only a few blocks from Bar CC, but Chelsea Community News describes it as a place that is "in no rush to see you go." Owner Simone Viola built it around life and wine as they're enjoyed in Verona, with more than 60 labels on the list.
The hours show which avenue fits a weekday
A posted schedule tells you who a place expects. Bar Lento opens at noon on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, opens at 11 a.m. on Sundays and is closed Mondays. Its happy hour runs on weekend afternoons.
| Bar Lento | Hours |
|---|---|
| Monday | Closed |
| Tuesday and Wednesday | Noon to 10 p.m. |
| Thursday | 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. |
| Friday and Saturday | Noon to 11 p.m. |
| Sunday | 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. |
| Happy hour | Saturday and Sunday, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. |
Put the Eighth Avenue places together and they cover a whole day. Lidl opens at 8 a.m., Cinnaholic at 9 a.m., MadDough sells out by noon, Bar Lento handles the afternoon, Hungry Spicy covers dinner later in the week, and Cinnaholic stays open until midnight from Thursday through Saturday. You could buy groceries, pick up a bagel, have a glass of wine and get dessert without leaving one avenue.
The places near West 15th Street are more about the night itself. You can't reserve at Bar CC, and STK sells the DJ as part of dinner. The two Chelsea Market stalls give you a reason to make a special trip: Alleva's daily mozzarella and Oishii's strawberry pastries.
November follows the same split
The coming weeks fit the same pattern. On the west side of the neighborhood, things happen on specific dates. Eighth Avenue keeps the same hours every week. Here's the calendar from publication day onward:
- Thursday, November 5, 3 to 5 p.m. The free Guided Gallery at Hudson River Park's Pier 57 Discovery Tank, an interactive gallery with weekly programming led by The River Project.
- Saturday, November 7, and Saturday, November 21, 8 to 11:30 p.m. The Chelsea Baila Social Club takes over Chelsea Local inside Chelsea Market.
- November 7 through 25. The High Line's docent-led "From Freight to Flowers" tours run on the remaining Wednesdays and Saturdays: November 7, 11, 14, 18, 21 and 25. Wednesday tours are 10 to 11:30 a.m., and Saturday tours are noon to 1:30 p.m., per the High Line's events page.
- Thursday, November 12, 5:30 to 7 p.m. TV chef and cookbook author Judy Joo signs copies of "Mukja: Let's Eat!" at Chelsea Market.
- Through Monday, November 16. ARTECHOUSE's "Twilight Zone: Hidden Wonders of the Ocean," made with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, ends its run at Chelsea Market.
- Through the end of November. Christopher Williams's "MODEL" stays up on the High Line billboard at 18th Street and 10th Avenue.
Almost every date on that list falls within a few blocks of Bar CC and STK. The Eighth Avenue openings don't need a calendar, because their hours repeat every week.
